Attending Midland College (MC) is about more than going to class and walking back to your car in the parking lot. Extracurricular activities have become as integral as schoolwork in producing well-rounded, successful students, says the National Center for Education Statistics. According to recent findings, students who participate in outside activities have better attendance, achieve better grades and tend to continue their education further than those who aren’t involved outside the classroom.
Midland College offers something for everyone, from clubs to service organizations to athletics to theater and music ensembles. The MC Student Activities Office promotes activities year-round, including House of Chaps open mic night several times during each semester. In addition, the MC Scharbauer Student Center hosts a game room, a grill and computer stations for student use. For those students who like to stay active and in shape, the MC Fitness Center located in the PE Building is open day and evening, and there is no charge for current MC students with a valid student ID.
Students at MC can participate in various clubs, organizations and athletic programs. Many of the offerings provide scholarship and career opportunities to active participants. Holding office in an organization, actively being part of a club or volunteering for a service project enhances your application to a four-year institution while boasting your resume.
Chances are, if you have an interest, MC has a club or organization to match.
Do you enjoy meeting people? MC Student Ambassadors are actively involved in campus activities. They serve as MC greeters at sporting events, lecture events and performing arts programs. Ambassadors also promote campus leadership. Their responsibilities include volunteering for campus events, gaining leadership skills and having a GREAT time while promoting Midland College. Students accepted into the Midland College Ambassador program receive a $500/semester scholarship!
Like engineering? The MC Engineering Club organizes field trips and helps with the annual Science Extravaganza event. Members also get to meet program personnel from four-year engineering schools at major universities.
Music lovers might consider the Chap Chorus or one of MC’s music ensembles, and budding actors can audition for roles at the Midland Community Theatre. Personnel from the Midland Community Theatre teach all MC drama courses, so students enrolled in the drama classes get an “inside look” at the workings of a theatre. If dance is your thing, this year MC is incorporating a dance team into the Spirit Squad program. If you want your voice to be heard, consider being part of the MC Student Government Association.
From anime to gaming to Bible study, MC has creative outlets for all seeking to enhance their college experience through extracurricular activities.
Phi Theta Kappa, the internationally acclaimed honor society serving two-year institutions offering associate degrees, has an active chapter on the Midland College campus. Phi Theta Kappa provides scholarships, opportunities for development of leadership and service and a lively climate for the exchange of ideas and ideals.
Midland College athletics and spirit
The Midland College Athletics Department is committed to the excellence of its student athlete and to help them grow in their athletic endeavors, as well as in the classroom. MC is a member of the Western Junior College Athletic Conference, and all of MC men’s and women’s athletic teams compete in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). Midland College has won 20 NJCAA championships and boasts 284 NJCAA All-Americans and 52 Academic All-Americans. Midland College athletics include men’s and women’s basketball, golf, baseball, softball and volleyball. Many MC athletes are recruited by four-year institutions.
MC’s mascot is Pepe, who, along with the cheerleaders and dance team, is a member of the Spirit Squad. The squad is a group of selected individuals whose purposes are to promote and uphold school spirit, encourage crowd participation at athletic events and develop a sense of good sportsmanship among students. The squad is the foundation of athletic and academic spirit.
