Midland College was established in 1969 when the residents of Midland — by a margin of almost four to one — voted to become a part of the Permian Junior College System, composed of Midland College and Odessa College.

The school expanded in 1972 with the formation of the Midland College District. Bonds in the amount of $5.1 million were issued for construction of a 115-acre campus and groundbreaking for the new campus was held in October 1973. Al G. Langford was named first president of the new institution
